WBC orders rematch between Chocolatito and Sor Rungvisai

Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez expects Rungvisai to give him the rematch

The World Boxing Council (WBC) announced on Tuesday that it ordered a direct rematch between newly crowned super-champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and Nicaraguan Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, former owner of the 115-pound crown, who faced each other on March 18 at Madison Square Garden in New York, USA.

Sor Rungvisai won that fight by a majority decision, but the ruling was heavily questioned by the boxing press. Many saw the “Chocolatito” win, but not the New York judges, appointed by the WBC. Incidentally, the Thai nodded several times to the pinolero, but the judge of turn did not comply with the rules of the Council.

Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the WBC, released the information on this day, also points out that Carlos Cuadras will face the Mexican Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada. The statement released by the WBC today is as follows,

“The WBC received a request from Teiken Promotions / K2 Promotions to order a direct rematch between their fighter, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, after the sensational fight they staged on March 18, where Sor Rungvisai of Thailand, obtained the victory by majority decision.”

The WBC Board of Governors considers that because of the great fight, which was extremely close, and considering that the rules in WBC championship fights over head butts were not employed, but more importantly, because there is a high public demand to witness this clash once again. The World Boxing Council has granted this request by unanimous vote to order the rematch between Sor Rungvisai and Gonzalez.

The WBC had ordered the winner of the March 18 fight to face Carlos Cuadras; However, considering that the rematch will not take place at some time because of the medical suspension of both fighters due to the cuts they received, the WBC is ordering a fight for the interim championship between the two highest available contenders, Carlos Cuadras vs Juan Francisco Estrada.

The winners of both fights ( Srisaket vs. Gonzalez and Quadras vs. Estrada) will face each other immediately.

The WBC is very happy with this ruling, as it will provide a series of great fights, something that is very important for boxing and for fighters.
