Canadian knockout artist David Lemieux (37-3, 33 KO’s), who delivered the most spectacular knockout of this nascent 2017, will return to action in a 10-round super middleweight fight against strong and experienced Mexican fighter Marco “Dorado” Reyes (35-4, 26 KO’s) at the event of the long-awaited battle between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6 and live on HBO Pay Per View.
In another fight, former US Olympian and undefeated Joseph “Jojo” Diaz (23-0, 13 KO’s ) will expose his NABF belt against the undefeated contender Manuel “Tino” Ávila (22-0, 8 KO’s) in a 10 round fight.
These two fights along with the main event and the previously announced contest between Argentine knockout Lucas “La Maquina” Matthysse (37-4, 34 KO’s) and Emmanuel “Tranzformer” Taylor (20-4, 14 KO’s) will make up the explosive and balanced televised Pay Per View portion.
Oscar de la Hoya, president and chief executive officer of Golden Boy Promotions, said,
“With three of Golden Boy Promotions most exciting contenders are appearing in the Pay Per View as well as the biggest star in the sport, Canelo Alvarez. I hope four action-packed fights will keep fans out of their seats all night.”
Lemieux, the powerful knockout champion in Montreal, Canada, is going through a three-game winning streak and was last seen in his devastating third-round knockout win over top-of-the-box North American Curtis “Cerebral Assassin” Stevens who placed the Canadian on the opportunity for the title.
David Lemieux said,
“I am grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of this event during the Cinco de Mayo celebrations.”
“I think I was able to send a clear message on March 11 with my performance against Stevens (Curtis) and I intend to do the same on May 6. I want to make sure everyone understands that David Lemieux is making his way and intends to stay.”
Reyes, a 29-year-old former WBC middleweight champion, has knocked out 25 of his rivals and fought fiercely hand in hand with Chavez Jr. but lost in a unanimous decision.
Marco Reyes said,
“I know everyone is talking about Lemieux (David) knockout, but I’m ready to defeat him. With my Mexican fans leaning on the Cinco de Mayo weekend, I’m ready to turn off the lights on Lemieux.”
Oscar De La Hoya, President and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said,
“David (Lemieux) has proven to be a true warrior, facing all the challenges and usually ending those challenges by knocking out his opponents. Reyes (Marco) stood firm in his fight against Chavez Jr. and I hope he is more than ready for this fight, but if he is connected by one of those monstrous left hooks or right hand of David. It will be tough for him.”
In the battle that will open the HBO Pay Per View broadcast, there will be two unbeaten fighters coming out to fight, Joseph “JoJo” Díaz Jr. and Manuel “Tino” Ávila, risking their undefeated titles for a chance of maximum glory .
Joseph Diaz Jr. said,
“I’m excited to get back into action for the first time in 2017 and put my title on the line against a tough contender. This fight will put me closer to a world title.”
Manuel Avila said,
“This is a golden opportunity to project myself into the world title dispute and I’m not planning to let this opportunity slip. I know all about the undefeated record of ‘JoJo’ (Diaz Jr), but he has never faced anyone like me. At the end of the night my hand will be raised in victory.”
